Descrizione

Problem: Bar grates, a quarter-turn "off" will trap bike tires, throw riders to pavement or into traffic.

Two problems: these should be modern "checkboard" grates (which are safe no matter which way they turn), but when re-using old "parallel bars" grates they NEED to be turned 90 Degrees to be safe on a city street.

All along "redone" Main St, there are old-style "bar grates" that are oriented in the "interstate highway" direction (highways forbid bikes and mopeds, so it is there preferred to orient catch basin grates in the "egg slicer" direction shown).

But on any street where bikes and mopeds are permitted, bar grates need to be turned in the "rumble strip" direction so that a skinny tire does not drop between the bars.

Once a skinny tire drops into a grate like this, the tire is trapped/wedged and the bike/moped stops and the rider is thrown face-first into the curb, pavement or traffic. Not good.

Please instruct a city crew to inspect the catch basin grates and turn them 90 Deg into the rumble strip orientation where necessary.
