Because of this problem, when I turn west onto Chapanoke from S. Saunders, I stay in the left lane until I've passed that trouble spot. However, that is not a satisfactory solution to the problem.

Thisarea is a huge challenge - cars pull out half way into the right hand lane from the shopping center - sometimes it is to see, but other times it is because they have overshot the sharp incline of the lot. The trees and bushes nearby are challenging, however, there is a grading issue that prevents a good line of sight to the street. I always am on high alert to this overall area (including the turn onto Olympia) and the cars wanting to turn into the gas station.

This needs to be improved for the safety of everyone who travels that area

Unfortunately the city of Raleigh seems to care more for trees and bushes than for the well being and safety of it's citizens. Cutting down the bushes in fromt of Taco Bell would be a great first step. The problem is made worse by the drivers coming out of the parking lot refusing to back up when they pull many feet out into the road. Maybe a police officer watching the area and fining drivers for their wrecklessness would also help.

I will refer to our Public Works staff to see if they have any further suggestions.

Drivers pull out of the Taco Bell side as if they have the right of way. In defense of some of them, they can't see oncoming traffic because of the bushes. Others are simply aggressive drivers.

Trim the bushes down and place a large stop sign at the exit.

Or, wait for the inevitable accident.

How about adding a visible white line showing where to stop and a convex mirror to help see around the turn?

During heavy traffic around lunch time and in the afternoons, this intersection is a real issue. People approaching Chapanoke from the shopping center pull way out into the road and oncoming traffic have to swerve all too often. Maybe cutting down the hedge to the corner would help them be able to see oncoming traffic.

A marker showing where to stop is also a good idea, I am not always sure that drivers understand how far out they have pulled into the street.

About 90% of the time we are leaving or entering the neighborhood we witness near accidents at this intersection, and at the entrances to the BP and to the Taco Bell centers. I think if only allowing main access to the BP service road directly from S. Saunders (closing the Chapanoke entrance), as well as having more defined lanes would help significantly. Also cutting back the bushes that block the view of those exiting out of the Taco Bell lot onto Chapanoke.

I do not know the solution....but the whole exit area including the side road on the right as you leave Ren. Park is confusing. It is just so unsafe. We have experienced drivers shooting out in front of us as we make our way into Ren. Park.

There is no stop sign for traffic coming out of the shopping center (Taco Bell). I agree also that the bushes make visibility almost zero unless you pull out into traffic. A solid white line, in combination with a stop sign and cutting bushes would help.

However, traffic here is a nightmare regardless of what is done about the above said vehicles. Vehicles who wish to turn left onto Chapanoke coming from the BP direction, vehicles who wish to turn left onto Chapanoke coming from the Taco Bell direction, added to the traffic that backs up at the light make this section a disasterous mess.

Also, it would be great if the light at Chapanoke/S.Wilmington had a light for LEFT turns onto S.Wilminston, instead of having to yield. This would cut down on the amount of back up on Chapanoke.

This is a very confusing stretch of road. I have also witnessed and been involved in several near misses in this short distance.

Additionally the shopping center with the Hispanic food store doesn't have a stop sign and people just pull out in front of traffic both coming into and leaving Rennaisance Park.

I concur with statement that people exiting the Taco Bell parking lot are fairly aggressive about their perceived right of way exiting the lot. Drivers will have the front half of their vehicles out into Chapanoke almost to "wedge" themselves across the lane. They won't back up if no is behind them and frequently provide inflammatory gestures if you don't stop to allow them to finish existing the lot.

I agree with everyone here, who is documenting the deteriorating traffic situation at Chapanoke and Wilmington. With the Latino shopping center, the Asian grocery, Taco Bell, Cook Out Grill, Wendys, the state liquor store, many other stores, the new Strayer college with hundreds of students, and Renaissance Park with hundreds of new residents - it is high time the city of Raleigh wake up and get involved here. Other than Capital Blvd and Glenwood at Crabtree, this south Saunders to Tryon Road strip is now the busiest spot in the city of Raleigh!

I would like to add one thing: PEDESTRIANS! CAT buses 7 and 26 stop at Chapanoke and Wilmington as well, picking up and discharging pedestrians into a mega-intersection - with NO sidewalks and NO crosswalks anywhere. I have been listening to the local politicians talk about the need to emphasize sidewalks and crosswalks in Raleigh where needed. If not here, then where?

John - Renaissance Park has to get everyone they can out to the Pedestrian Planning Open house on November 16th 4-7PM at the Progress Energy Center for Performing Arts / Fletcher Lobby. We need to make sure our voice is heard as the new plan for sidewalks and walking conditions are discussed.

What about closing this exit from the shopping center entirely (onto Chapanoke) and creating a new one directly onto S. Wilmington? This might be costly but would certainly help the huge number of near-accidents for people living in the neighborhood. Otherwise (or in addition), a designated turn signal for cars turning left onto South Wilmington from Chapanoke would be immensely helpful for flow on Chapanoke and especially as it relates to this issue.

Why should we have to beg the city of Raleigh to help a Tax payer to be SAFE and address a major problem please fix it before someone gets hurt or killed.

The demographics that shop here tend to pull out in front of people regardless of traffic control devices.

The City is well aware of this location and has been working on for some time. The proximity of the frontage road (Olympia Drive) to the signalized intersection of Chapanoke Road/Wilmington Street in addition to the numerous access points to the shops on the north and south side of Chapanoke provides a large amount of conflict points. This setup is currently not permitted (with new construction) and hard channelization may be required to remedy numerous conflict points this location has. We have had multiple meetings internally and with NCDOT about how to improve this location. The regional Traffic Engineer with NCDOT has thoroughly reviewed this location and potentially committed using NCDOT Spot Safety funding to help pay for the yet-to-be-determined solution. Unfortunately installing hard channelization prohibiting left turning movements is not an option unless some sort of u-turn or method to allow vehicles access back to the Chapanoke/Wilmington Intersections is included. Without this option, there is no reasonable way for vehicles to get from the northern shopping center back to the intersection. The City and State have several upcoming meetings planned for a solution that will minimize the conflict points yet do so at a low cost while providing reasonable ingress/egress options in the near future.
